Summary/Description

Virtual Manipulatives are online applets (usually java or flash) that provide students with the opportunity to interact with content. In this presentation virtual manipulatives will be defined, examples will be given, and classroom uses will be discussed. Additionally, participants will be given the opportunity to play with and experience learning with virtual manipulatives. Resources for finding, using, and developing virtual manipulatives will be provided.

My Virtual Manipulatives

This is a series of Flash Applets created in SWiSHmax. Most were created as part of a series on linear equations. Flash player required for viewing.

Points and the Coordinate Plane - A self-contained review applet providing instruction, followed by unlimited practice on points and the coordinate plane.

Interactive Graphing Tool - An applet for graphing linear equations in slope intercept form. Includes dynamic graph, table and equation.

Graphing Linear Equations: Method 1 | Method 2 | Method 3 - A series of applets containing instruction and then practice with graphing linear equation by finding 3 points on the line, finding the intercepts, and using the slope and intercept.

Graphing Linear Equations Practice - A single applet with the practice section from each of the methods mentioned above.

Graphing Linear Equations Examples - A single applet with the "guided examples" section from each of the methods mentioned above.

Interactive Numberline - An interactive numberline for practicing addition and subtraction of integers.

Finding Slope Examples - An animation applet containing 6 examples of finding the slope of a line. Not really a virtual manipulative.

More Virtual Manipulatives on the Web

Formal Collections being developed by research or non-profit organizations:

  • NLVM - National Library of Virtual Manipulatives. 100+ virtual manipulatives complete with lesson plans and the ability to create virtual classrooms. Searchable by topic or grade level (K-12)
  • Illuminations - From the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Contains some virtual manipulatives in the "Activity" section. Also see the NCTM OnMath online publication for more.
  • Mathlets- From the Journal of Online Math and its Applications. Mostly undergraduate topics, but some could be used for higher secondary levels as well.
  • Project Interactivate - Shodor Education Foundation. Include lessons, tools, and "discussions".
  • ESCOT - Educational Software Components of Tomorrow. Middle School Math problem of the weeks for the math forum.

Pay Site:

  • ExploreLearning - Pay site, but you can test each applet for 5 minutes for free or get a 30-day free trial. Excellent VMs for math and science.

SWiSHmax Tutorial

This tutorial is intended to give an introduction to using SWiSHmax to create interactive Flash applets. You will need to have SWiSHmax on your computer to complete this tutorial. You can download a 14-day, fully functional trial version of SWiSHmax here or you can purchase the $20 educator's version here.

Finished Example - This is the final Flash applet that you will make when you have completed the tutorial.

Part 1 Doc - The first part of the tutorial as a word document.

Part 2 Doc - The second part of the tutorual as a word document.

Part 3 Doc - The second part of the tutorual as a word document.

Please feel free contact me to let me know if you found this tutorial helpful and to give suggestions for improvement.
