Managing Files and Web Site Maintenance
Updating a Web site can be extremely arduous, if done by hand. Changing a link to your new shopping cart checkout on every page becomes daunting on a multi-page site. If one link is missed, you turn a paying customer away.
New Web technologies are making this task easier:
- CSS- Cascading Style Sheets- allow for the entire site design, colors, spacing, etc. to be updated at once. This site is using a style sheet that controls font, size, and color.
- SSI- Server Side Includes- allow for easier layout changes and updates of information. So that this site can also be operated from a disk, no virtual includes have been used on this site. The average computer does not have Web server capabilities.
- Templates- allow all template based pages to be updated at once. This site implemented templates in its development stage to "work the bugs out," before the final design.
