One of the hardest parts about doing academic research on the Internet is figuring out where to start! A search engine or subject portal is usually the first thing to try, but which are the most useful for your research need? Fill in the short form below, and we'll point you in the right direction.

IMPORTANT! For every question, you can check any number of boxes (or none).

  2. Research stage...

I want to understand the scope of a topic I've selected
I want to consider alternative or related topics
I need help refining and narrowing my topic
I'm not doing extensive research -- I just need an answer or fact

  3. Finding quality results...
authoritative and scholarly sites picked and organized by a subject expert
personal help from an expert or a group of knowledgeable people
sites identified by Web users as valuable or relevant
    primary sources

  4. I'm researching in a specific discipline...
    physical and life sciences
    government
    engineering, mathematics, computing
    health and medicine
    law
    humanities
    arts and creative industries

  5. I'm looking for a specific type of media, namely...
    maps
    photographs and visual images
    fine art
    videos
    radio
    music
    sounds
    speeches
    quotations
    statistical data
    a dictionary or thesaurus
    an encyclopedia
    almanac data
    books and other printed works

  6. The timeliness of information that I'll need about my topic is...
    today!
current (the past couple of days)
recent (the past couple of years)
    historical
    ancient

  7. My search includes a proper name, specifically...
    a person
    a place
    a company

  8. Special search requirements...
run my search periodically while I'm offline (and be notified of new hits)
specify a country where my search results are located (for example, sites located in Finland have a URL ending in ".fi")
use a search engine based outside the United States
find sites organized by the Dewey Decimal System or Library of Congress Classification
locate files of a specific type (PDF, XLS, DOC)
