The Florida Supreme Court is the highest court in the State. It is an appellate court, so (almost always) cases that the Supreme Court hears have gone through many other trials. The Supreme Court is (almost always) the last stop.
Sometimes the legislature will pass laws that conflict with the state constitution. It is the State Supreme court who hears these cases and decides if the new law can stand.
Florida has had quite a few high profile cases. If you're feeling extra ambitious the Supreme Court trip is a good opportunity to include a lesson on elections. Explain how the Florida Supreme Court had to decide the legal issues surrounding the 2000 presidential election.
Visiting the Florida Supreme Court is best done with some preparation. Visit the Education and Tours section of the FL Supreme Court website to schedule a tour. That is unless your family comes on oral argument day!
To enter the Supreme Court building you must pass through a metal detector and like all of the buildings featured here, the Supreme Court is ADA accessible.
The Supreme Court is open: Monday - Friday (excluding holidays) for self-guided tours from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
