How many places are there where kids get the opportunity to pretend they are legislators or a Supreme Court Justice?
The Historic Capitol Museum has rooms designed just like those the Senate, the House and the Supreme Court used in 1902.
Take a moment in each of these spaces to explain the functions of each part of the government. See if your kids notice how many more chairs there are in the House than in the Senate chamber. Remember that in order for something to become law it has to pass both the House and the Senate!
Also be sure to stop by the re-creation of the Governor's office. This exhibit is not as interactive, but it does provide a great glimpse back at history. Be sure to find the wall of past governors. Point out to your kids who was governor the first year you lived in Florida.
Like all of the buildings featured here, the Historic Capitol is ADA accessible from the Capitol Plaza side entrance.
The museum is open: Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Saturday 10:00 am - 4:30 pm Sundays and Holidays Noon - 4:30 pm Closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
