Lake Chad is surrounded by the countries Chad, Niger, Nigeria, and Cameroon. For these countries, Lake Chad is the source they rely on for the freshwater that they need. However, Lake Chad has a history of shrinking and then growing again because of droughts that are often present. (2002 Lawrence University)

Overall, very little has been done to protect the wetlands. Treaties have been implemented to create cooperating from international groups to help preserve the lake. In addition to treaties and committees, there are a few non-profit organizations that are raising awareness of the disappearing lake. There have been non-profit organization such as the World Wildlife Fund and Greenpeace, as well as other smaller groups dedicated to protecting Lake Chad. Organizations located overseas, such as an organization called Action for Greening the Sahel (located in Japan) has focused some of its attention to the desertification of the Sahel region, as well as Lake Chad.
Overall, if Lake Chad disappears, there will be problems ranging from the irrigation of crops, to the decline of trees and the lake shrinks in size. The countries surrounding the lake do not have the money to protect it, so with the help from the government and non-profit organizations, the people are slowly trying to correct the problem.
