Surrendering A Bird

If you are reading this page, you may have made the difficult decision to give up your feathered friend. It may be because of life changes, moving or behavioral problems...or just that you think the bird needs more attention than you can currently give it. Whatever the reason, please feel free to contact me. I will take in your bird if at all possible. Your bird will receive the best care I can possibly offer it, and a good diet. This rescue is mainly for cockatiels but I also take in other small birds as space allows.

Birds brought to my rescue will either be kept permanently or offered for adoption when they are ready for a new home. All birds will be converted to pellets (they still get seed as a treat). They are also given veggies and sprouts when I have time to make them. Birds will then be evaluated and given as much attention as they want. Some warm up slower than others. It is best if the bird comes with the cage it has always been kept in with toys. Birds gain a great deal of security from their cage and can be very frightened when transferred to a new cage.

If incoming birds do not come with a cage, they will be given a large cage once here. The smallest cage my birds are usually housed in is 16 inches tall and wide and 24 inches long. The exception to this is if a bird has been housed in a very small cage for most of its life. These birds are often scared of large enclosures and may take awhile to warm up to living in a large cage (so slow introduction may be required. Once birds are found to be healthy and on a good diet they are allowed to socialize with other cockatiels. All potential adopters and homes will be screened carefully to make sure your bird(s) get the best possible home.

I will do my best to take in your bird but may not be able to if I lack the space to quarantine it or if your bird is severely ill. Since I care for birds using my own finances without other financial support, I may not have the money to foot heavy vet bills. It is also better for the birds already here if incoming birds are healthy as well. I will not take in more birds than I can comfortably care for as it would be unfair to the birds already here not to get the attention they deserve. You are welcome to bring your bird to me. I may also be able to pick up your bird if you are within an hour of Gainesville or meet part way (depending on what my schedule allows). I also occasionally travel to Orlando.

Please contact me if you have a bird that needs a new home with some TLC. If I can can take in your bird, I will send you directions on how to get here and my phone number. If I cannot take in your feathered friend, I will contact other people and try to find another bird lover who can. You are welcome to visit by appointment to see how my birds live before surrendering your bird. I want you to be comfortable giving up your bird. I do keep some of the birds I come across or that people bring me but if I cannot keep your bird permanently, I will find it the best home possible no matter how long it takes.
