There are about 60
million American today who experience heartburn on a daily basis. Even
though there is a large amount of medications available there are
millions of people who are walking around with necessary uncomforted.
The most common heart burn that we see today is the episodic heartburn,
because this is something that is treatable. There are different ways
in which individuals can prevent heart burn. The first way of
prevention is to do some modifications in the life style. One way would
be to remain upright after a meal. This is important because
individuals would usually experience heartburn after a meal because
they decide to lie down in bed or recline on a chair. You can also
avoid heartburn by eating smaller meals, avoiding spicy or acidic foods
(example: tomatoes, and fruit juices), lose weight, quit smoking, avoid
tight fitting clothing. People who have problems at night when they are
sleeping they can make accommodations by raising the head of the bead
by 6 to 8 inches to reduce the symptoms. Although,
there are ways in which an individual can prevent heartburn by making
some life modifications, there are other ways available as well. An
individual can also take some kind of medication. There are different
levels of medication that are available over the counter. The first
level will be the Antacids, second level are the H2 Receptor
Antagonists, and the third one is the Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI’s).
The Antacids have no effect on the production of acid in the body. It
works very quickly and works best if the individual takes it after the
individual has the heartburn. However, it is important to keep in mind
that antacids don’t last very long. There are also Acid Blockers (H2
Blockers) such as Axid, Pepcid, Tagamet, and Zantac. These acid
blockers are very effective. They Reduce the amount of acid that is
being produced. It can be taken up to hours before a meal or as soon as
possible after they meal. For individuals who experience heartburn
constantly, they can take PPI’s such as Aciphex, Nexium, Prevacid,
Prilosec, and Protonix. These medications may need to be taken for a
few days in a role and require the most planning.
