Abstract

This four minute and 36 second video is a clip from the 19 minute film Spit Tobacco: No Dip, No Duh. This film was produce by Discover Film Video to educate young people about smokeless tobacco. This film emphasizes a tobacco prevention program featuring young people taking a stand against chewing and dipping tobacco. National High School Rodeo Champions and Rodeo Queens talk about the negative consequences for using smokeless tobacco. This video features an exciting rodeo championship; with an overall theme of you don't need dip to win! The film features a retired bull fighter Travis Whittaker, who has oral cancer. The video shows him before and after his radiation therapy. The video also features pictures and images of people with cancer at the mouth and people who have undergone surgery to remove the cancer. The video also features Mr. Gross Mouth, which is a model of a mouth with cancer at the tongue and cheeks, with discolored teeth and gums. This model represents what smokeless tobacco can do to the mouth. The video concludes with charismatic students pleading with their peers to say no to smokeless tobacco.

Critical Comments

1. Price. Although the video is somewhat expensive, the message and the overall impact that the video will have on students is well worth the price of the video.

2. Content. The content of the video is accurate and appropriate for the targeted audience.  The information about the effects of smokeless tobacco on the mouth and gums is up to date, accurate and appropriate for the target audience. The video also provides graphic pictures necessary for reaching this target group and appropriate for teaching this target group.

3. Approach. The video has an interesting approach on presenting the information to students. Instead of just having a panel of experts with a just say no message, this video uses a combination of experts and peers to emphasize the just say no message. The experts talk about the physical consequences associated with the use of smokeless tobacco. While the students or peers reinforce the overall message that you don’t have to use smokeless tobacco to be successful.
