Folding
- Lay the shirt out on a flat surface (damp shirts are easier to work with)
- Pinch shirt in the middle or wherever you want the spiral to begin
- Twist the fabric until it starts to form pleats
- Continue twisting until it becomes a circle shape and you can see the spiral in the middle of the shirt
- Tuck in the extra flaps to make sure it is a conscise circular ball
- Put one rubber band around the whole ball to hold it together
- Place three rubber bands across the ball, creating six equal size sections
- Soak in the soda ash solution for 20 minutes and wring out excess
Dyeing
Once you have created the sections with the rubber bands, the dyeing process is easy.
- Put dye in each quadrant, making sure that you push the nozzle of the dye bottles into the pleats to saturate the fabric
- Flip the fabric over and make sure to put the same colors in the same sections
- You do not want to dye pooling out of the shirt, so make sure not to oversaturate the shirt
- Let the shirt dry outside for 24 hours
