There are several types of DPIs available in the market. Early models such as the Spinhaler or Rotahaler dispense pre-fixed doses of drug by puncturing gelatin capsules, i.e. one capsule of a given dose at one time. Recently, multidose systems such as the turbuhaler have been introduced that overcome the limitations of the earlier DPIs. In the following sub-sections, the major components of each type of inhaler are displayed.
