The Turbuhaler is an example of a multidose reservoir powder system. Pure drug sufficient for dispensing 200 doses can be preloaded. The particle size of the drug powder ranges from 1 to 2 µm, but the particle size of the carrier can range from approximately 20 to 65 µm. Due to the large size, most of the carrier substance (lactose or glucose) is deposited in the oropharynex. To get optimal performance, each DPI is designed to be operated at a specific inspiratory flow rate. The fine particle fraction of respirable drug produced by the DPIs in the market ranges from 10% to 60% of the nominal dose.
