A meat thermometer is the best way to guarantee that your steaks will be cooked exactly the way you like them. There is no reason to waste money by ruining steak. The internal temperature of the steak determines the doneness:

Cautionary Note: It is accecptable to cook steak to an internal temperature of 145 degrees because it is a whole cut and the interior of the steak has not been exposed. However, ground meat such as hamburgers should be cooked to 160 degrees.
