Cooking Steak!

There are many ways to cook steak and it is important to know how you will cook the steak before you choose the cut. The two primary ways of cooking steak are:
- Grilling: Direct high heat typically from a gas or charcoal element.
- Skillet: Direct heat that may be high or low depending on your preference. A heavy nonstick skillet is the best option for people who may not have access to a grill or if they prefer the cooking style and flavor from a skillet. Cooking steak in a skillet is the best option if you marinated the meat.
- Broiling: Using the oven to brown each side of the steak is an option, but it is important to have a meat thermometer to monitor the internal temperature of the meat. It is very easy to over and under cook the steak.
The Meat Thermometer is Your New Best Friend

The two T-Bone steaks in the photo are overcooked, which is why it is very important to make meat thermometer your best friend. A meat thermometer is the best way to guarantee that your steaks will be cooked exactly the way you like them. There is no reason to waste money by ruining steak. The internal temperature of the steak determines the doneness:
- 145 degrees fahrenheit=Medium rare
- 160 degrees fahrenheit=Medium
Cautionary Note: It is accecptable to cook steak to an internal temperature of 145 degrees because it is a whole cut and the interior of the steak has not been exposed. However, ground meat such as hamburgers should be cooked to 160 degrees.
