Something Old/Something New

Fifth Avenue/Pleasant Street proposed constructionThe Fifth Avenue/Pleasant Street Neighborhood and Surrounding Development Proposals. During March and April 2003 the Florida Community Design Center exhibited a variety of projects proposed for the Fifth Avenue/Pleasant Street neighborhood, an African-American, low-income redevelopment district. The occasion for the exhibit was the development of proposals for streetscape improvements and redevelopment along NW 5th Avenue. These projects, designed by graduate architecture students, were shown in the context of other ongoing or proposed work including the current Model Block Program, the neighborhood's master plan, commissioned in 1999, the gateway and crosswalks proposal now partially under construction, the Eco-Trail proposal, and various architectural proposals developed by students in the School of Architecture.

These students projects were located in the context of significant new development proposals currently under consideration, including the Midtown Apartment and Hotel Towers, Grand Oaks, and University Corners. Scale models were constructed by architecture students Denise Schlumbohm, Chris Carlson, and Nick Brinson.
