SONG LYRICS

The Blues
During the 1920's the blues spread all across the U.S. and became increasingly popular. It had started out as a type of African American slave song but became a form of entertainment on the radio, in bars, and in dancehalls very quickly. One of the biggest names for blues singers at this time was Bessie Smith. She sang songs like Lost your Head Blues in 1926, that expressed the root of the blues songs. Color symbolism played such an important role in these blues songs. The color blue symbolizes depression, sadness, and hard times. For the slaves, this was a way that they expressed some of those feelings that they were having. And in the 20's when our country wasn't doing very well the blues was a way to show this through song as well. This form of color symbolism through song lyrics is so important for students to study because it teaches them about the African- American culture, U.S. culture and history, and the social functions of language.
