DRAMA

Othello

Color symbolism in drama can be viewed in two ways. Visually,
themes can be created using colors in the setting and mood (like
costume coloration and lighting). Color symbolism is also used in
the same way it is in literature. For example, in Othello
Shakespeare uses green to talk about jealousy referring to it as "the green monster
of jealousy. "Another color used in Shakespeare's Othello symbolically is the
color black. Black is used in the play's dialogue in two ways. One way it is used is to discuss Othello's race. This is important because this is the first work to have an African as the main character.

"...have a measure to the health of black Othello." Act II scene
iii 32-33

"Haply for I am black..." Act III scene iii 263

Black is also used to refer to the jealous and evil character he
becomes by the end of the play. Other colors that are incorporated
in Shakespeare's Othello include white and red.
