As an undergraduate at the University of Florida my specific area of study
has been within the field of Sociology. Through courses that have
been offered at the University of Florida, I have had the opportunity to
learn and study about the social dynamics of societies and the various
groups that comprise them. In addition to working on a bachelor's
degree in Sociology, I also am currently working on fulfilling the requirements
for a minor degree in the area of post secondary education.

Introduction
to sociology. Study of culture, socialization, deviance, and institutions
within society. The structure of society and the social stratification
of its members by class, race, ethnicity, gender, and age.

Social Problems
Study
of social problems existing in society including poverty, crime, racism,
drug abuse, teen pregnancy, and various other social issues. Focus
is toward problems existing within the United States while making cross
national comparisons to other industrialized nations.

Study
of the contributions of various historical and modern sociologists in developing
different theoretical approaches to explaining the phenomena of social
life.

Introduction
to the scientific method and use of statistical information and data analysis.
Includes the study of the proper methods and ethics of research involved
in conducting, analyzing, and presenting of information.

Medical Sociology
Study
of disease and illness as progressing through time while paying close attention
to both biological and social causes of illness as dispersed by race, age,
gender, and class.

Sociology of Gender
Examines
the social construction of gender in the United States as compared to other
countries. Attention is focused on the economic, educational, and
domestic spheres of society in helping to foster gender inequality.

Explores
age stratification in society and the process of aging within personal
conditions of post retirement. Focuses on inequality in terms of income,
health, social/family support, and health care as a result of class, gender,
and race

Uses
various theories of crime to explain criminal nature and behavior.
Study of the criminal justice system in helping to prevent crime, punish
law breakers, and rehabilitate criminals. Draws on statistical data
illustrating crime activity in different geographic regions while including
variables of race, gender, age, and class.

Focus
is on the identification and teaching practices of students with special
needs. Attention is placed on knowing various tools and methods used

study of the period of adolescence. Includes various theories to
explain cognitive, social, and moral development. Examines various
social issues affecting teens such as pregnancy, drug use, puberty, and
peer pressure.

is placed on advances in the field of psychology in helping to further
educational practices in goal setting, instruction, student learning, and
evaluation. Incorporates various theories related to cognition and
psychosocial development in effort to build a better understanding of the
process of learning.

An
examination of the institution of education and its development and practices
throughout history. Various schools of thought are looked at for
their contributions to the development of education throughout time and
incorporates important components of social stratification, society's subcultures,
and its values in influencing educational policies.

Helps
students to become familiar with various forms of technology and ways of
integrating technology into content instruction. Students gain experience
with using technology as a tool for instruction and valuable resource in
helping to promote higher order thinking among students.

Attention
is focused on various ways of assessing student performance and achievement
while paying special consideration to aspects of validity and reliability
in assessment methods. Different methods of measurement and evaluation
are used in construction of tests.
