Aside from writing,
research and teaching Dr. James is extremely passionate about the
several community organizations she dedicates
her time toward, these include the Adventist Community Services (ACS), Shelter from the Storm, Inc. and CHARM. James is currently the Director of the Gainesville Chapter of Adventist Community Services (ACS). ACS is a non-profit community services agency that works within the United States and Bermuda through more than 1100 agencies. ACS was established in 1879. It is a network member of the Adventist Disaster Relief Agency (ADRA) which is an international disaster relief agency. Shelter from the Storm, Inc. is a not-for-profit, faith-based organization that provides a structured, spiritual living environment for recently released male ex-offenders. The Shelter opened its doors on November 2, 2001. The program provides residents with housing for up to six months, assists with finding employment, and provides life-skills training. CHARM is a non-profit, minority, community-based agency that aims to reduce health disparities among rural minorities in North Central Florida. CHARM was founded in 2000. CHARM has received several million dollars in state and national grants to educate rural minorities on cancer, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and drug abuse. |
