A growing network
As street papers continue to expand, most larger papers unite through two major networks: the International Network of Street Papers and the North American Street Newspaper Association. The two organizations connect papers either internationally or nationally and offer resources the papers wouldn’t otherwise have.
Street newspapers can share content through a wire created by INSP known as the Street News Service, which publishes articles from all over the world.
The International Network of Street Papers
More than 100 publications in 40 countries unite under the INSP. With a combined readership of six million, the INSP proves that street papers are necessary in the fight to end homelessness.
Every year the INSP holds a national conference where street paper representatives meet for skill-building workshops and networking. In 2011, the conference was held in the same city as INSP’s headquarters: Glasgow, Scotland.
Street News Service
The SNS is a newswire where street papers can republish other articles for free. The service, which is partnered with Reuters News, boasts that it publishes the best of street paper reporting.
The North American Street Newspaper Association
The photo on the left is of a vendor selling Street Roots, which is a paper located in Portland. NASNA is the regional INSP network. The organization is comprised of 23 U.S. papers and eight in Canada. Not every U.S. street paper is a member of NANSA, so there are countless others who aren’t counted in these statistics.
