money used for funding

How to find funding

Starting a street newspaper can be difficult. Essentially it is a nonprofit, and the paper itself costs money to print.

Many street newspapers ask local governments for grants. Partnering with another nonprofit or business can also help, as costs would then be split. Some national organizations offer funding for programs that help those in poverty.

The way most street newspapers make money is from sales.

Vendors purchase each paper for about 15 to 40 cents. On the streets, they sell the newspapers for a dollar and keep the profit.

For the larger and more successful street papers, this money is usually enough to keep the newspaper going.

One last way to fund a newspaper is through advertising. Businesses will pay to have ads published in the street paper’s pages to touch on a readership they may not have otherwise.
