Type of Assignment

Self-Evaluation

Description of Assignment

After completing our Microteaching assignments in various secondary schools in the county, the students of MUE 3330 are required to do a self-evaluation. What this entails is reviewing a video of ourselves teaching a lesson and looking for weak areas, strong sections, and areas for improvement. The self-evaluation is written up and handed to the professor while the class reviews the video recoding of the lesson, giving the student and teacher an opportunity to reflect on the lesson. The self-evaluation document demonstrates Accomplished Practice #3 in the following ways:

Artistic Processes/Medium

This self-evaluation helps the students reflect both externally and internally on themselves as a teacher. It gives them the opportunity to see what activities during class were successful and which ones need to be altered. This is also used to aid in the development of better techniques for assessment and communication. Having to write down how one feels about the direction the class went is powerful in revealing possibly some aspect about the person that they did not realize.

Rationale

The self-evaluation is a great way to move towards dramatic self-improvement. Having to look at yourself and state what went well and what went poorly from an observers point of view can have dramatic effects on one as a teacher. This is a form of review and shows the desire for improvement in the education field. The evaluation gives the students the opportunity to go back to the drawing board, or have proof that a certain form of teaching a different aspect does, in fact, work.

After completing the microteaching at various middle and high schools, students in MUE 3330, Second Education Methods, are required to complete a self-evaluation. This evaluation gives the students the opportunity to look back on the lessons they have taught and outline and identify what events in the class went well and which ones need improvement. This students are required to complete the evaluation in writing and submit it to the professor on the day that they submit their videos, which are simply recorded lessons they have taught that are viewed by the class. These self-evaluations demonstrate to the students easy methods of reviewing and improving their teaching skills that is not very time consuming but efficient.
