Through this practice-oriented workshop, participants learn a family
wellness approach to adolescent substance abuse problems that is
collaborative and capitalizes on the strengths and resources of the
adolescent, family, peer group, and concerned helping professionals from
larger systems to rapidly stabilize the presenting problem. The main
therapeutic emphasis is on what is right with the adolescent and his or
her family, not on what is supposed to be wrong with them. As a
result of attending this workshop, participants learn the following
practical "how-to's": (1) Solution-oriented brief
family therapy: A family wellness approach, (2) Interviewing for
change: Co-creating compelling future realities with families, (3)
Angry and pessimistic parents: Research-based parental empowerment
tools, (4) Effective engagement strategies with challenging
substance-abusing adolescents, and (5) Solution-enhancement strategies for
constructive management of client slips or setbacks.
Breaking Cultural Myths-Domestic Violence Interventions with
Immigrant and Refugee Populations -2/09/01

Dr. Julia Perilla
This workshop addressed the issue of domestic violence in immigrant and
refugee communities and explored ways in which culture affects
interventions and programs directed to these populations. The
presenter comes from a human rights, ecological perspective of domestic
violence that uses culture as a framework from which to dialogue
regarding this urgent social issue. Drawing on her experience of
over 10 year with Latino immigrant families affected by domestic
violence, Dr. Perilla presented an intervention that draws from the
ideas of liberation psychology, third world feminism, and community
wisdom.
An Adlerian Approach to High-Impact Interventions in a Time
Limited Setting - 2/25/01

Dr. Francis Walton
Dr. Walton provided a brief overview of principles and
techniques based upon the psychology of Alfred Adler. He demonstrated an
efficient approach to helping parents and children understand how they
contribute to troublesome behavior including poor achievement. The first
demonstration was conducted with parents and a child. The second
demonstration involved brief life style formulation designed to help an
adolescent understand how his approach to life takes him to his
successes as well as to his difficulties. Participants were trained in
the brief intervention techniques and then observed their implementation
first-hand.

Getting Through to Difficult Kids and Parents
The morning workshop provided both the concrete tools to get parents/kids
to cooperate, spotting psychiatric/developmental problems early on,
handling the professional's own intense emotional reactions, getting
resistant, uninvolved parents "hooked in" and helping
kids/parents to repect the rol/boundaries of professionals and getting
kids to open up and parents to listen
The Second
Family: Facing Adolescent Power
The afternoon session focused on helping parents handle "hooking up,
acting out" peers networks. Particularly of interest for
parents and communities trying to counter th influences of pop culture.
Athens-Clarke County Child
Watch 2001: A Walk in Their Shoes - 5/10/2001
Junior League of Athens, Athens, GA
The National Child Watch initiative was developed
by the Children's Defense Fund in 1990 to prompt community-based action
and to improve the lives of children. The mission of the 2001 Athens-Clarke
County Child Watch initiative was to make community leaders aware of the
needs of teenagers in the Athens community, to help leaders experience
Athens through the eyes of a teenager, and to encourage leaders to act
on behalf of the children in Athens-Clarke County.
The
Pre-Professional Graduate Certificate Program in Marriage and Family Therapy
is designed to provide an interdisciplinary program for graduate students
interested in the applied field of marriage and family therapy.
Completion of the requirements of the program will provide a strong basis
preparing the student to undertake further supervised clinical training
in marriage and family therapy. (Coursework
