Everything changes. That's life. Security doesn't attach to a paycheck, pension plan, person, or place. Still, what we need shows up, maybe in peculiar form, disguised as something unwanted or coincidences that seem beyond coincidence.

I'm thankful for a self-employed dad who liked to move and a mom who had really extraordinary adventures. I learned early to travel light and expect the unexpected. I value experiences over stuff, and even so, I have to keep decluttering.

It's tough for everyone, especially parents raising kids, in a consumerist culture that bombards us with constant messages of never having or being enough. The bombardment doesn't let up, boomtimes or bust. In a bust economy more people see the beauty of low overhead, and some come up with novel ways to add income, like freelancing.

No matter a person's family and work background, Asking questions suggested on the next page might turn up an undiscovered knack for letting go, a little, of steady jobs as the only means of support and fulfillment.
