Preparing your mindset for sorority recruitment at UF
Sorority Rush
Here are my 5 pieces of advice for any potential new member going through recruitment at the University of Florida:
- Begin with the end in mind: Establishing what you want out of a sorority will help you create a foundation for your recruitment experience. It’s especially important to be confident in the reasons why you’re there, because it’ll come in handy when realizing the parts of a sorority that are most intriguing to you.
- Be yourself: This is the key to opening the door into this next chapter in your life. Be the person who you want to be accepted for being, because you’re special and you want your individuality to feel at home wherever you end up.
- Talk to active sisters or alumni: To gain an authentic impression of sororities, talk to girls who have experienced what it’s like to have a sisterhood prior to recruitment. This can establish a better perspective of what to look for in the potential chapters. Do this research, otherwise your vague knowledge of sororities may be based off of films or stories you’ve heard, which may not accurately depict what it’s really like, and may hurt your understanding of what you’re looking for in a sisterhood.
- Refrain from tent-talking: You don’t want to be gossiping about other chapters. Gossiping usually leads to offending someone and creating problems between friendships. The girls under your tent could become your friends or sisters, so be careful how you’re acting – no matter how stressed you are, be gracious and wise about what you say. If you feel surrounded by people poking questions to each other about the houses, take some time to write down notes on how YOU felt about the house in order to stay focused on being true to your own experience and feelings.
- Enthusiasm. Throughout recruitment, hold onto quotes, verses or other pieces of motivation to help you get through the week and keep your head above the stress. Be confident in your values and what you’re looking for and allow that to shine out. Don’t be discouraged, but remember that you are staying true to yourself and life will work out exactly the way it needs to. Be sure to stay in the moment and approach each house with an open mind and energetic spirit. Enjoy the conversations and don’t be burdened by perfection, but embrace the quirky conversations and have fun letting the girls get to know you.
