A modern country, many roadways are paved. The fastest routes are toll-regulated freeways, or autopistas. National highways are classified by the prefix N; regional highways have the prefix C. Roads without a route prefix may not be in as good condition as highways with the prefix C or N. Just as in the U.S., it is important to be aware of speed limits and other signs.
In the Drivers Seat
Driving is a great way to acheive a personalized trip to Spain. Renting a car is adventurous but achievable with an International Drivers License issued by the American Automobile Association or the National Auto Club. The cost is less than $20.
Not Exactly a Cheesewagon
Bus tours are very popular, allowing tourist to see Spain without the difficulties of trying to navigate. A number of bus routes reach the faintest towns. Bus travel is generally cheaper than train travel, depending on the selected route.
Taxi to Me
Taxis, too, are popular. Green lights signal unoccupied and run on a meter. Some services have predetermined prices for set routes. Negotiating price for a day of travel will bring discounts, it a decent tip is provided.
