Advantages and Disadvantages
In summary, using the MDIs has the advantagesof:
- Portable and compact
- Efficient drug delivery
- Short treatment time
However, its disadvantages include:
- Complex hand-breathing coordination
- Can not change drug concentration
- Whether the canister is used up is difficult to determine accurately
- Some patients may have reactions to the propellants
- If an accessory is not used, high orophyaryngeal impaction can be high and the drug is wasted
If the MDI is used with an accessory to over come the disadvantages of a regular one, it has the following advantages:
- Less patient coordination required
- Less pharyngeal deposition
- No drug preparation required
Meanwhile, the disadvantages for using the MDI with an accessory device are:
- Can be more complex for some patients
- Cost is higher than a MDI alone
- Lower portability
- Not available for all medication
