Advantages and Disadvantages

In summary, using the MDIs has the advantagesof:

  • Portable and compact
  • Efficient drug delivery
  • Short treatment time

However, its disadvantages include:

  • Complex hand-breathing coordination
  • Can not change drug concentration
  • Whether the canister is used up is difficult to determine accurately
  • Some patients may have reactions to the propellants
  • If an accessory is not used, high orophyaryngeal impaction can be high and the drug is wasted

If the MDI is used with an accessory to over come the disadvantages of a regular one, it has the following advantages:

  • Less patient coordination required
  • Less pharyngeal deposition
  • No drug preparation required

Meanwhile, the disadvantages for using the MDI with an accessory device are:

  • Can be more complex for some patients
  • Cost is higher than a MDI alone
  • Lower portability
  • Not available for all medication
