Justification of Activity:
I
have always been worried about how much time my Spanish students have
in the class to speak throughout the semester. They always
tend to
avoid having conversations and end up speaking in English
without covering all the steps given in the instructions. There are
many factors not to take the chance to practice their communicative
skills: some students are too shy, some took the class
as a requirement and just need to work for a "C". Others just
aren't good
at speaking and quit the task, some don't have enough confidence in
themselves to negotiate meaning with a partner, some don't see Spanish
as a tool in their future careers. All these aspects are really
frustrating for me as a teacher and as a promoter of Spanish, my
language and my culture, in a different country.
As an instructor who promotes
her language among her students, I have the challenge of preparing all
the needed sources to facilitate this personal goal. This specific
pedagogical tool is helpful because it practices synchronous written
communication among learners. They will have an opportunity to chat in
a non-threatening environment, as well as a chance to overcome some of
the negative factors that are affecting the improvement of the
"speaking" skills. One more thing about the purpose of
this source is that it will make the students feel more confident
to go beyond in the face to face conversation for this and future
Spanish classes.
Finally, I think chatting will help
them
build up appropriate the vocabulary, grammar and cultural parts of the
class.
