Fixed-gear bikes are single-speed road bikes that have a locked cog on the back wheel instead of a freewheel. This means no coasting. Anytime the back wheel is in motion, the pedals are moving. This makes braking possible by back pedaling, and therefore brakes are just something for other riders to mock.
