LESSON PLAN – 2nd Period Beginning Band (50 minutes)

Guitar Hero Lesson

Objectives:

Students will learn about the origins and various transformations of musical notation.

Students will identify similarities and differences in notation of today and that of one-hundred years ago.

Students will learn of new ways of notating music and demonstrate this knowledge through the use of the video game Guitar Hero II.

 

Learning Activities to Meet the Objectives and Standards:

Guitar Hero II – Playstation 2 Game Console

1.      Have students sit in their typical ensemble seats without their instruments.

2.      Announce that today we will be learning about the evolution of music notation.

3.      Review current music notation of today (whole notes, quarter rests, etc.).

4.      Pass-out handout that follows along with the prepared powerpoint slide show.

5.      Begin power point presentation on the evolution of musical notation.

6.      End the presentation with a connect from the contemporary methods of music notation and the methods of notation used by video games such as Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero.

7.      Ask the class various questions from the worksheet.

8.      After the presentation review is complete, ask for students who have completed the entire worksheet to raise their papers so the teacher can check for completeness and correctness.

9.      Pick two students, if their worksheets are complete and correct allow them to be the first to participate in a round of Guitar Hero II.

10.  Play as many rounds as time allows.

11.  Hand out music Sudoku puzzle as a homework assignment.

1.      Prompt: What was unique about the music notation in Guitar Hero I and II?

2.      Prompt: Trace notation back to its earlier days. How has it changed with how we read music today? How is it still the same?
