Type of Assignment
It is the responsibility of the teacher to establish a positive learning environment for students. In the creating process of lesson plans to use at Lincoln Middle School, I was obligated to establish this environment in my lesson.
Description of Assignment
A lesson was taught at Lincoln Middle Elementary School in an effort to become more acquainted with teaching an actual class, as opposed to teaching ones peers and having them act as though they were in middle school; real life representative on-the-job training. The students of MUE 3330 are required to create a lesson plan in which they are given examples of previous lesson plans but have the freedom to choose what subject matter and content they wish to cover in their lessons, as long as it adheres to the direction the music teacher wishes to go. The students then prepare visual aids and whatever other materials they need to be able to engage the class and teach as if they were the teachers in the class. This lesson plan demonstrates Accomplished Practice #9 in the following ways:
Establishes an active environment for music learning
Assists students to develop responsibility and self-discipline
Maintains a positive class or rehearsal room atmosphere, including the appropriate use of praise
Focuses instruction on the learning of music by the students
Artistic Processes/Medium
This is a creative example in that it is up to the teacher to create a positive atmosphere and a lesson plan. This focuses on creating the environment that is most beneficial to the students.
Rationale
This example illustrates a positive learning environment with the use of unique warm-up exercises and activities different from what the students are used to. This illustration demonstrates Accomplished Practice #9 in that the atmosphere created establishes a mutual level of respect for the students and teachers in which the students understand who is in charge and the teachers respect the students' ability to answer questions and participate in the activities of the lesson. Because the lesson is created to concentrate on music, the focus is on the students and learning the characteristic of music that the teacher is responsible to teach.
