This example of ethics and professionalism is a volunteering opportunity that was used in a middle school beginning band.Description of Assignment
As a student preparing to enter the professional education realm, I have received the opportunity to teach the advanced beginning band and create lesson plans to use in this real life middle school environment. This example stems from a typical morning class. I created various lesson plans in which I covered various scalar warm-ups, rhythms, and also covered the meanings of various musical symbols they would need to know in the future. This teaching opportunity demonstrates Accomplished Practice #6 in the following ways:
Demonstrates professional concern for students
Adheres to relevant code of ethics for music teachers
Meets expectations regarding attendance, punctuality, and record keeping
Artistic Processes/Medium
No artistic processes are addressed in this illustration.
Rationale
This teaching experience was a decent representation of true professional life as a music educator. It was my duty to be on time and have the classroom ready before the students arrived. Not only that, it was my responsibility to maintain track of how the class was progressing. There also needed to be an establishment of who was the teacher and who was the student. For the most part the students respected me when I was on the podium. They understood that I was teaching them. This is typically easier with younger students. At no point in the lesson did anyone disrespect any one else. Every student was treated equally.
Illustration
This lesson was designed in such a way that all students would benefit from the lesson, regardless of background or experience. For the more advanced students, they had an opportunity to stand out and lead the group while the less advanced students got the opportunity to learn helpful hints that would help improve their playing ability as well as their musical knowledge. It was important that as the teacher, I was always prepared and organized. There was always a completed lesson plan ready to be used and the materials for the class were constantly ready. Because I dressed professionally, as if this were my school, the students were more receptive to me as a teacher, as opposed to if I had come to school in cut-off jeans and a sleeveless shirt.
