Spring 2006Type of Assignment
This assessment example stems from an interview and observation of Mr. David Olsen, the band director at Abraham Lincoln Middle School. Mr. Olsen was asked about his feelings, various methods, and data collection dealing with assessment.
Description of Assignment
I interviewed Mr. David Olsen, the band director at Abraham Lincoln Middle School. Mr. Olsen was asked about his feelings, various methods, and data collection dealing with assessment. I also observed six hours of Mr. Olsen in action; watched his teaching process and how he incorporates assessment into not only his lessons, but also his planning and preparation for teaching his students. This interview outlines aspects of Accomplished Practice #1 in the following ways:
- Uses assessment techniques appropriate to the grade level and students
- Employs a variety of assessment techniques
- Assesses individual and group musical performance and gives specific behavioral instruction for improvement
- Assesses learning in a positive, non-threatening manner
Artistic Processes/Medium
This is a responding example in that I was responding to an experience I had through the observation/interview process. After observing six hours of his teaching, spanning from his beginning ensembles to his more established and mature ensembles, I interviewed Mr. Olsen and questioned him about his assessment procedures, which were evident in the way he taught his class. He was able to give me a clear and concise explanation of his assessment preferences, procedures, and prerogatives.
Rationale
This interview describes the various policies and processes that are necessary for a new teacher to deal with and create in order to make assessment work for him. In turn, this is an excellent example of assessment because it outlines the challenges that may be encountered when attempting to incorporate assessment into a performing arts class.
