Description of Assignment

Over the course of the upper class years of college, the music education students at the University of Florida are required to create and maintain an online portfolio of the twelve accomplished practices. This is done not only to prepare the students for their future in being able to document there teaching events to these practices, but also as a reference for a resumé for future job applications and interview. The students are given an amount of internet space and a domain name in which the students are required to create examples of various practices, give examples, and keep these examples up to date. They are also given flexibility to change their layout as they please, however, they are cautioned that the more simple and easy to read, the better. The music technology course demonstrates Accomplished Practice #12 in the following ways:

Artistic Processes/Medium

This activity gives the students an opportunity to become more computer literate than had they not had to deal with a computer. This assists in their navigation skills which will be necessary when they are in the professional world seeing as how the society is moving more and more towards dependency on computers and machines. Even if the student does not agree with this and does not plan to run his/her program by these confines, it is necessary to be versed in the uses of a computer in order to keep up with the fast pace of the 21st century.

Rationale

The portfolios demonstrate the use of technology because without the use of a computer, they would be impossible to activate, create, or view. Through this assignment the students spend many hours on the computer, learning shortcuts and key strokes to navigate through different areas of the machine.

All music education majors a the University of Florida are required to create and maintain an online portfolio of the accomplished practices followed by the music teaching world. This activity gives the students an opportunity to become very acquainted with their computers and various programs such as Microsoft Frontpage, Fetch, Dreamweaver, and WF-STP Pro to name a few. This also helps out with their typing skills in that the students become more versed in the use of the key pad as they continue completing their portfolios.
