Secondary School MicroteachingDescription of Assignment
For a portion of the time the students spend in this Secondary methods class, they are given the opportunity to deal with true-to-life situations. The students are placed in schools in which they are required to teach eight twenty-minute lessons. The student is then required to use a video camera, using any type of recording medium from VHS to 8mm, and record their lessons. From there, the student is responsible to view the lesson, evaluate his/her performance, and then show one lesson to the class for discussion. The music technology course demonstrates Accomplished Practice #12 in the following ways:
Uses learning media, computer applications, and other technology to enhance instruction in music
Provides students with appropriate hands-on experiences with technology in learning music
Assumes a proactive attitude toward technological developments in music and music instruction
Artistic Processes/Medium
The ability to record a lesson is vital in the beginning stages of learning how to teach. In this instance, the video recordings were used to illustrate to the students their strengths and weakness, some possibly that were not noticed before hand. Watching oneself teach is a good way to find out what they can do better and also helps stimulate thought on how to improve and generate new ideas. The videos were watched in class and evaluated, but allowed for the students to see themselves from the perspective of their students.
Rationale
This particular event within the class demonstrates the use of technology because the student is using a video camera. This camera may be used to record future student auditions as a teacher and rehearsals and performances. These recordings in turn will allow the teacher not only to evaluate him/herself, but also the level of their ensemble. This also allows for the teacher an opportunity to focus on the ensemble for other reasons outside of the performance, and take themselves out of the role of director and transform into an observer.

A third of the way into the semester, the students were given secondary facility assignments and were required to teach eight twenty minute lessons. When they taught, they were required to video tape their lesson and then review it after teaching. From that, the students were to chose one lesson and play it for the class for a class discussion on their teaching techniques and such. In order to show these clips to the class however, the students were required to use audio/video (A/V) cables that connected their selected recording devices to the projector in the classroom.
