ECHD 7600:  Foundations of School Counseling 3 credit hours
The profession of counseling and speciality practice as applied in schools.  Consideration of the nature of schools as well as school counseling programs that are comprehensive, developmental, and collaborative in nature.   The model of school counseling presented is centered on five major components: 1.  counseling & coordination, 2. educational leadership, 3. advocacy, 4.  team-building and collaboration, and 5. the use of assessment data to improve practice.
ECHD 7040:  Theories of Counseling & Human Development 3 credit hours
Selected theories of counseling and human development and their application to research, theory, and practice in educational, rehabilitation, community, and employment settings.  Development of helping skills through demonstration and role-playing situations.
ECHD 7060:  Cross-Cultural Counseling 3 credit hours
An exploration of the cognitive, affective, and behavioral considerations of counseling culturally diverse client groups.  Course includes an introduction to counseling theories and programmatic approaches relevant to the mental health needs and concerns of these groups, including an examination of how cultural attributes, strategies, and coping skills can be effectively synthesized into the counseling process. Content places a strong emphasis on cultural issues as they relate to schools.
FALL 2001
ECHD 7010:  Individual Appraisal 2 credit hours
Introduction to the principles of testing, types of scores, use of instruments and methods of assessing abilities, achievement levels, interests, attitudes, developmental variables, vocational skills and interests, and personality characteristics. Use of test and non-test data in counseling and human development services and introduction to ethical issues related to assessment.
ECHD 7050:  Lifestyle & Career Development (Theory & Research) 1 credit hour
Career development concepts, assumptions, theories, and research in educational, rehabilitation, community, and employment settings.    Issues related to the work, leisure and life-planning needs of particular clientele including ethnic minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, children and adolescents, adults in mid-life transition, and the disadvantages in both rural and urban settings are examined.
ECHD 8020:  Seminar in Counseling & Human Development 3 credit hours

EPSY 7110:  Characteristics of Gifted & Talented Education 3 credit hours
Psychological characteristics of gifted children and youth, including studies of the lives of eminent persons, empirical studies of gifted children and youth today, and models for identifying gifted children.  Attention given to understanding characteristics and needs of diverse populations of gifted students.
SPRING 2001
ECHD 7700:  Individual Counseling Practicum 3 credit hours
Supervised psychological counseling practice in a setting consistent with the student's professional goals.  Counseling practicum is one of a sequence of courses that collectively focus on the acquisition and enhancement of basic counseling skills.  The special significance of practicum is that it provides direct opportunities to integrate theory and practice in a group supervision format.  A central purpose of the course is to provide beginning counseling students with a supportive environment in which to process the activities they will encounter in their practice in the schools.
ECHD 7050:  Lifestyle & Career Development (Counseling Applications) 1 credit hour
Focus on the application of career development theory and research in counseling and educational settings.  Issues related to the work, leisure and life-planning needs of particular clientele including ethnic minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, children and adolescents, adults in mid-life transition, and the disadvantages in both rural and urban settings are examined.
ECHD 7080:  Introduction to Group Counseling 2 credit hours
Introductory group counseling theories.   Review of the basics of setting up and conducting counseling groups.  Discussion of ethical standards related to group counseling.
ECHD 8020:  Seminar in Counseling & Human Development 3 credit hours

ECHD 8130:  Expressive Arts & Play Media in Counseling 3 credit hours
An introduction to using expressive arts and play media in counseling with children and adolescents.  Course media include visual arts, clay, children's literature, creative writing, puppets, music, and dance/movement.
SOWK 6117: Social Work with Violent Families 3 credit hours
Multi-systemic, community-wide approaches to identifying and protecting family members from domestic violence.  Course content addresses partner violence, child abuse and neglect, elder abuse, and abuse of people with disabilities.
SUMMER 2001
ECHD 7000:  Master's Research 3 credit hours
Research while enrolled for a master's degree under the direction of faculty members.
ECHD 8100:  Developmental Counseling 3 credit hours
Cognitive, psychosocial, person-environment interaction, and life-span development theories in counseling.
FALL 2001
ECHD 7850:  Internship in School Counseling 3 credit hours
Supervised experience in an educational setting appropriate to school counseling.
EDUL 7040:  School Law 4 credit hours
Legal principles applied to educational institutions, including federal and state constitutional provisions, legislation, administrative regulations, and case law.
SPRING 2002
ECHD 7850:  Internship in School Counseling 5 credit hours
Supervised experience in an educational setting appropriate to school counseling.
