Our Role in the Community


PARKS

  • Established Kanapaha Park and Mason Manor Trails.
  • Designed, established & maintain a mini-park at the corner of NW 39th Avenue and 34th Street.

RECYCLING

  • Gave six Gator Helmet trash receptacles to the Athletic Association to be used at all football games
  • Placed Newspaper Recycling bins in six locations.
  • Established Unwanted Mail recycling program in the postoffice.
  • Maintained 230 cardboard recycling bins at commercial locations.
  • Helped to make Litter Free Events.

LANDSCAPING

  • Gave $5,000 to Westside Park for landscaping.
  • As part of the Governor's Front Porch Initiative designed and implemented a Streetscape complete with pedestrian street lights, jasmine groundcover on the right of ways and tromp l' oeil windows on a boarded up house on East 8th Avenue leading into the Duval Neighborhood.
  • Planted 76 live oaks between Archer Road and Old Archer Road as start of a linear park, over 100 crape myrtles on 39th Avenue between 43rd Street and Interstate, and over 40 crape myrtles on 43rd Street between 39th and SR 441.
  • Recruited median adoptors bringing the total medians now landscaped to 65.
  • Established a Landscape Bank in which surplus trees, plants, flowers, etc. are donated to us by nurseries to be used by neighborhoods, schools and churches requesting them.

COMMUNITY BEAUTIFICATION

  • Painted the following murals:
    "Flora and Fauna" mural on the Newberry Road I-75 Exit 76 Underpass
    "North Florida Wonders" mural on SW 13th Street at Archer Road intersection
    "Alligator" mural at corner of SW Newberry Road and Tower Road
    "HERE TODAY" mural on the Town Tire wall at corner of 8th Avenue and 6th Street.

  • Implemented the Mural Walk from Newberry Road to Terwilliger School
  • Designed, established and maintain the Student Victim Living Memorial Median on SW 34th Street.
  • Used over 1000 gallons of recycled paint on retaining walls, bridges, racquetball courts, bus shelters, underpasses, fire hydrants, etc. the last seven years.
  • Established Operation Blend-In in which poles and backs of signs are painted dark green or black to blend in with the environment.
  • Worked on establishing Welcome Islands at 10 entrances to the community.
  • Established committee to improve SW 13th Street corridor and Rails to Trails Overpass.

EDUCATION

  • Placed Keep America Beautiful curricula (Waste in Place, Waste, a Hidden Resource and Graffiti Hurts) in 26 schools and conducted an accompanying hands-on Teacher Training Day.
  • Established N.I.C.E. (Neighbors Involved in a Cleaner Environment) communities in the Pleasant Street Historic District, Tower Oaks, Northwood, Grove Street and Ridgeview Neighborhoods.
  • Established Beautiful Block programs in Lincoln Estates, Grove Street, Ridgeview, Duval and Pine Park Neighborhoods.
  • Gave 563 Youth Presentations to 72,967 attendees the last seven years.
  • Held Coloring, Poster, Essay, Poetry, Building, and T-shirt Design contests in the schools.
  • Placed "We Noticed" signs in front of five deserving sites each quarter.
  • Mounted three successful awards banquets: Topping Off the Millennium and two Beautiful Achievements.
  • Actively involved in the Gator Trails program and published Gator Trails Coffee Table Books.
  • Gave 913 community presentations reaching 497,725 people.
  • Sent out warning letters to loiterers who were reported to us by our 180+ Trash Troopers.
  • Had 85% success rate of builders in Parade of Homes signing Clean Builders' Pledge.
  • Began a Clean Commercial program. in which business take a pledge to follow ten easy steps.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

  • Collected over 2,505 tons of trash and recyclables in ten Great American Cleanups.
  • Collected over 1,724 tons of trash & recyclables from neighborhood cleanups in last eight years.
  • Organized Adopt-a-River/Shore cleanups including Santa Fe River and Lake, Hogtown Creek, Newnan's Lake, Biven's Arm, Tumblin' Creek, Springstead Creek, Rattlesnake Creek, Rosewood Creek, etc. collecting 107 tons of trash and recyclables in last four years.
  • Held 731 cleanups of State Highway, County Road and City Streets the last four years.
  • Organized 264 Adopt-a-Spot cleanups collecting over 7 tons of trash last six years
  • Cleaned up over 1,048 graffiti sites in the last seven years.
  • Cleaned up and cordoned off 48 illegal dumps in last seven years.
  • Established Sheriff's Work Crew in which weekend inmates collected.
