A FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL

Voodoo is typically characterized as a barbaric, primtive, sexually licentious practice based on superstition and spectacle. Much of this image however, is due to a unique religion that Flourished among their enslaved Africans. Voodoo has come to be associated in the popular mind with such phenomena as "zombies" and "voodoo dolls". While there can be some evidence of zombies in the country but not a part of the actual religion. The practice that everyone think voodoo is with the sticking the needle into the doll is really not voodoo. The practice of sticking the pin into a "voodoo doll" has been used as cursing an individual by some followers of what come to be called "New Orleans Voodoo". This is also called hoodoo. For More information on Voodoo in New Orleans Click Here! This is really something different from the actual voodoo itself. This practice has much basis in European-based magical devices. Which include things like a "poppet" as the nkisi or bocio of West Africa. These "voodoo dolls" are not a part of the Haitian religion, although the dolls are in such marketplaces in Port au Prince to attract some tourists. The practice with the voodoo dolls became such a big thing when hollywood started to put them in horror movies so people started to think that Haitian Voodoo was associated with sticking a pin into a voodoo doll.

However, there is a practice in Haiti of nailing crude poppets with a discared shoe on trees near the cemetery to act as messengers to the otherworld, which is alot different from the voodoo they do in New Orleans. Voodoo is one of the offical religions that is mistreated and misunderstood.
