Look for the metaphorical language used in describing your event. Find, if you can, an example of a dead metaphor. Remember that a dead metaphor is a figurative expression that no longer causes you to think of its original context. (Foot of a mountain, strait-laced). Another example would be the description of the Vietnam War as a “quagmire.” To get the original context you would need to think of someone stuck knee-deep in a swamp. Another would be the description of the JFK assassination as a coup d’etat. Literally it means a “stroke of state.” Your goal would to be rediscover the original context or to enter the frame of mind that allows us to notice more than one reference in a word.
