Sleeping is Life...

Welcome to the world of cats!

Cats seriously know how to live. They pretty much only eat, sleep, play and use the litter box. Isn't that the life? If only we could sleep as much as cats--but I suspect we would never get anything done.

Cats do sleep a lot, but in caring for your cat, you need to make sure you know when it's over the top. If a cat is ONLY sleeping or is very lethargic, a trip to the veterinarian's is in order! If your cat keeps you up at night, that could be perfectly normal, according to the Cat Channel Web site. But if it is a new development in his behavior, once again, a trip to the vet's would be a good idea.

The site states that cats are nocturnal. So, it's normal for cats to be up all night and sleep during the day, even though that's not usually what we do ourselves.

According to "Why Do Cats Do That? Real Answers to the Curious Things Cats Do," cat sleep up to 18 hours a day, which is far more than most other mammals.

People joke about taking "cat naps," but sleeping really is a huge part of a cat's life.

The book attributes this pattern to the fact that cats are solitary animals.

Kittens and older cats tend to sleep the most, cat passed out on couch but any cat can pretty much sleep any time. It's a way to pass the time, for sure. And an interesting point made in the book: Cats may sleep all day in order to be awake at night for an owner who works a day job. Otherwise, they normally only sleep for a short period of time several times throughout the day.
