Nana the Banana Spider

Nana lives in my front yard located in Gainesville, Fl. Its starting to get cold again and I know Nana isn't going to be with us much longer *sniff* So, I've decided to make a page for her.

Introduction to Banana Spiders in General:

The Banana spider which is less commonly known as the Golden Silk Spider or Calico Spider is a non-poisonous Florida spider that eats lots and lots of nasty bugs that no one wants to deal with such as mosquitoes, flies, moths, and those scary butterflies.

So, in other words... spiders are AWESOME. Especially when they are big, non-poisonous -- aka, they can eat big bugs and not kill the random jack ass who decides to mess with the spider's stationary, meter wide bubble and accidentally gets bit.

IF YOU WANT TO GET RID OF THE SPIDER for whatever reason, JUST TAKE DOWN ITS NEST. IT WILL GO AWAY AND NEVER BOTHER YOU AGAIN!!
It will be busy eating all the bugs far far away from your home so that you'll have plenty of flies & mosquitoes to entertain you.

And now that I've given an mini Banana Spider intro I introduce to you Nana....

Nana's Short Biography:

Nana started out amongst her hundreds of brothers and sisters as a 2mm spiderling somewhere in Gainesville. After a harsh youth running away from various different predators such as frogs, lizards, birds, beetles, ants, bigger spiders and others, Nana found the perfect home.

She built her web between two trees about a meter apart (which is about as big as banana spider web gets), out of the path of humans, and fairly close to the houses' porch light which attracts bugs at night. Nana's real luck, however, lied in the fact that inside that house lived three slackers who many times would overfill the kitchen trash and not take it outside in time. As a consequence of this the trash got infested with flies and instead of throwing out the trash, the trash (along with all the flies) was placed underneath Nana's web so she could munch on some snacks before permanently disposing of that trash bag.

That night Nana was witnessed catching at least four flies. Its pretty certain, she caught many more. Especially since it took the slackers another three days to move the trash bag from the yard to the actual trash. But, the important part of the story is that Nana grew and grew, until she became the gorgeous colorful, healthy 10cm long (3.5cm body) suga mama that she is today.

And yes, Nana is a Suga Mama. Many times there will be smaller spiders of other species around (waaaay smaller) chilling on her web. A male banana spider was never witnessed however a sac which slightly resembles eggs are there so I assume his stay was short yet pleasurable... in an S&M kinda way. Hopefully others will come and she will lay many many eggs so that in the future Nana's children may have a happy full life in my front yard.
