“I’m N Charge” Abstinence Only Program
The abstinence education program (“I’m N Charge”), will focus on school youth 14 to 18 years of age by promoting the importance of abstaining from sexual activity until marriage through the use of abstinence education tools that reflect the cultural and ethnic population of Hendry County while teaching the social, psychological, and health gains that result from sexual abstinence until marriage. Within the context of the abstinence curriculum, the message of abstinence being the only certain way to avoid out-of-wedlock pregnancies as well as the psychological and social harms that can result from pregnancies will be taught.
- Our program “INC” (I’m N Charge) will be delivered at both of the county high schools and serve 1,987 youth. The in school component will include an eight week abstinence only education curriculum (Game Plan) for all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders annually.
- The curriculum is culturally sensitive for both African-American and Hispanic youth. It was developed with the assistance of A.C. Green, a well-known African American sports figure. It includes goal setting and decision-making skills. The curriculum materials are available in English and Spanish.
- The after-school component will be three days a week and will provide tutoring, teen mentoring, expansion of the abstinence message, job/career skills, and a licensed mental health counselor. The mental health counselor will be available 2 days a week to provide individual counseling to the youth, provide expertise in parent training sessions, conduct parent counseling sessions, provide referrals, and conduct group counseling as needed.
Parents are provided a monthly newsletter that will give information on communicating with adolescents, sexually transmitted infections, and the importance of abstinence until marriage for the overall health and well being of their adolescents and future grandchildren. If you would like to be added to the newsletter mailing list please call or e-mail Amy Rosado in LaBelle or Pamela Jackson in Clewiston.
