- Interested in finding if there is a
direct relationship between population growth and economic success
- Currently maintains one of the highest
economic growth rates since its independence in 1966
- Diamond mining is 1/3 of Botswana's
GDP which has helped fuel its economy's expansion
- 35.8% (in 1999) of adults were infected
with the AIDs virus
- HIV/AIDs killed 24,000 people in Botswana
in 1999
- HIV/AIDs infection rates are the highest
in the world and threaten Botswana's impressive economic gains
Land
Area
- 585,370
square kilometers (slightly smaller than Texas)
-
Population
Due to the rapid spread of disease
through the country, the average total life expectancy at birth is 35.29
years.
- Female: 35.49 years
- Male: 35.19 years
-
Although the growth rate of Botswana
is very low (.18%), the fertility rate of women is relatively high
(3.6 children)
--Through the research we have performed
for this project we have been enlightened to the fact that the AIDs epidemic
is a serious and growing issue in this country.
--The population growth is steadily declining due to the spread of disease
and lack of medical care
--Even though the population is declining the population continues to
thrive due to the abundance of natural resources.
