I've always had an interest in music. Songs hold the strongest connection to past events in my life. Music is both a calming and driving factor for me.

As far as playing instruments, that began in middle school band. I was an extra without a strongly declared interest, so I was put in a room with another student and given clarinet and trumpet mouthpieces. I made a decent sound on the clarinet piece, but I wanted to play trumpet. And so I got the other guy to play clarinet. For the record, he later moved to trumpet, so no bad karma there.

Trumpet didn't last beyond middle school for me, whether that was a mistake is one of those unanswered questions. A friend named Mike Magner turned me on to guitar heroes like Jimmy Page and Hendrix, and the modern virtuosos like Joe Satriani and Steve Morse. This carried with my, and in high school I took an interest in electric bass guitar, and began playing that. To this day I can't read bass clef. I didn't intensively study bass guitar, and did not advance much in skill.

Fast forward to the first year of law school, and I decide it'd be a great idea to try guitar. So I borrow my mom's acoustic, and after a while buy an electric. Now I find myself putting more time into both the bass and the electric guitars. I am actually making progress with both instruments, and find there is a complementary effect in learning both.

Thus, of all my hobbies, music has come back to the forefront. I now have an acoustic guitar, a four string bass, and an electric guitar... and an itch to pick up that trumpet again.
