PhD thesis: Thermodynamics of ion exchange and behavior of water molecules in zeolites
Zeolites are common constituents in geothermal and low grade metamorphic systems (e.g., Yellowstone National  Park, USA; Wairakei, New Zealand; Iceland) where they may participate in ion exchange reactions with aqueous solutions because of their open structures and high cation exchange capacities. Geologic observations suggest that the exchangeable ion contents of individual zeolites often vary with depth/temperature in these systems. It is unclear, however, whether these compositional variations reflect pore-water compositions or variations in cation selectivities with temperature and pressure. The main objective of this study is to test these hypotheses through a critical evaluation of the energetics of ion exchange between zeolites and aqueous solutions as a function of temperature and pressure.
