Fluoroketone Spectroscopy

The fluorescence and phosphorescence of the fluoroketone 2-Trifluoromethyl-1,1,1,2,4,4,5,5,5-nonafluoro-3-pentanone (available from 3M under the trade names Novec 1230TM and Novec 649TM) is investigated in a setup where the temperature, pressure and flowrate could be varied. The excitation source was a Continuum SureLite II-10 laser providing 150 mJ of 355 nm pulse energy at 10Hz through the chamber. Collection was done using a modified PI Acton HRE-250 Echelle spectrometer fitted with a PIMAX2 512x512 HBf ICCD. This is a continuation of the research on a simpler setup presented in the Applied Spectroscopy paper listed below. We carried out this characterization to support the work we are doing on supercritical jet mixing and cavitation using this fluid.

Test cell (left) and bubble chamber seeder (right) used for FK fluorescence characterization. Both chambers are fitted with independently controlled tape heaters. The exhaust is fitted with a choke needle valve and a flow meter mounted downstream of a cooling coil. The pressure is monitored in the test chamber during the test using an Omega PX-303 transducer. The laser beam passes through the chamber from left to right and is captured by the black cylindrical beam dump immediately to the right of the chamber. The emission is collected using an FC fiber collimator in front of the chamber passing the blue light to the Echelle spectrometer (seen behind test cell) through a lens and a Hoya L38 filter.
