“A humanitarian service organization, the American Red Cross annually mobilizes relief to the victims of more than 63,000 disasters nationwide. It has been the primary supplier of lifesaving blood and blood products in the United States for more than 50 years. In 2000 alone the Red Cross collected 6.3 million units of blood. In addition, the American Red Cross provides training in vital lifesaving skills, direct health and community services, and assistance to international disaster and conflict victims, and transmits nearly 1.4 million emergency messages between members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. The American Red Cross also addresses new challenges as they arise. Today, it is a participant in HIV/AIDS education, in the international campaign against childhood diseases, and in developing strategies in collaboration with the United States government for dealing with acts of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.” – http://www.redcross.org/
