- 2005 – 2008:
Post
Doctoral Research Associate. University of Florida. Agricultural and
Biological
Engineering Department (www.abe.ufl.edu).
I’m in charge of developing new methodologies for linking and
integrating Numerical
Climate
Models to Dynamical Crop Models to produce geospatial crop yield
forecasts in
the Southeast USA. Methodologies
will be
used to produce operational forecasts that will go through the
Southeast
Climate
Consortium directly to the farmers to improve
their decision
making processes. NOAA ARC – NA16GP1365: Regional Assessment of
Interannual
Climate Impacts. Subcontract with UF No. 02081352-1-1: Risk Reduction
for
Agriculture Specialty Crops in the S.E. USA. Southeast
Climate Consortium (SECC).
- 2007: Visitor
Scientist at the NOAA/NCEP Climate Prediction Center.
To analyze possible operational crop yield forecast systems for the Southeastern USA based on the GCM NCEP/Climate
Forecast System model
hindcasts.
- 2005: Visitor Scientist at the
International Research Institute for
Climate and Society. To develop a forecast system for predicting cotton
yields
in the Southeastern USA based on
Reanalysis data
and the ECHAM 4.5 model hindcasts.
- 1998 – 2004: National
Research
Scientist. International Potato
Center (CIP).
Division of
Natural Resource Management. La Molina, Peru.
I was in charge of the systematization and standardization of climate,
soil,
and crop information in Peru,
Bolivia, and Ecuador.
I developed process-based models for interpolating extreme
temperatures, solar
radiation and rainfall as well as the calibration and validation of the
crop
model (DSSAT) and the soil erosion model (WEPP). These models were
integrated
to GIS tools through the development of automatic software (GABP-LAB)
for
spatial modeling. On the other hand, I had the opportunity to advice
and
develop project join with the National Service of Meteorology and
Hydrology
(SENAMHI) in order to assess the impacts of ENSO in Peru
at local scale. Finally, I
trained Latino American professionals in modeling and GIS. Finally, I
performed
administrative activities in La Encañada watershed.
- 2002
- 2005: Asistant Research Scientist. 'Tradeoff
Analysis Project'. Phase 2: Scaling Up and technology transfer to
address
poverty, food security and sustainability of the agro-environment.
USAID SM-CRSP.
Montana State University/WU/CIP. Grant # 291488. In this phase, my work
was to
develop models to increase the resolution of soil maps and measure the
effects
of the input’s resolution of climate and soil spatial information. I
was also
involved in the analysis of the soil properties evolution in
slow-forming
terraces. (www.tradeoffs.montana.edu)
- 2002
– 2003: Principal Investigator. 'Early
climate
warning to the Andean Farmers: Linking seasonal climate forecast
information to
integrated GIS and biophysical models' Granted by the Global Change
System for
Analysis, Research and Training (START). In this project, I adapted and
applied
downscaling methodologies. Sea surface temperature forecast from IRI
was downscaled
to watershed level. This information was used as input in the GABP-LAB
software
to produce crop yields and soil erosion maps (among others) with three
months
in advance before planting dates. Pixel sizes of the maps were 50m x
50m. In
August 2003 the final maps were presented to the farmers to support
their
decision. We simulated management scenarios to fit the best decisions
under the
seasonal forecast conditions. Participatory research was done in order
to
analyze the base scenarios used by farmers and to measure the forecast
value.
-
2001
– 2003: Scientific advisor of the National
Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru (SENAMHI) for developing
the
Peruvian Atlas of Solar Energy. My work was to develop and to supervise
the
conceptual framework of the project. To calibrate and to apply the
model
‘Climate Interpolator v 2.1’ developed as part of my PhD. thesis. To
develop
the solar energy maps. To design the Atlas. To give training to the
project
team members in modeling and Geographical Information Systems – GIS
tools. (www.senamhi.gob.pe/atlas)

the crop
model DSSAT-SUBSTOR to highland conditions. Characterization of the
ENSO
impacts in the Altiplano. Geospatial analysis of crop production. (www.ssu.missouri.edu/Clima)
- 2003: Advisor of

Project’. Phase 1: Tradeoffs in sustainable agriculture and the
environment in
the Andes: A decision support system
for
policy makers. USAID SM- CRSP. Montana State University/WU/CIP. Grant #
291488.
In this phase, my work was to develop tools to improve the spatial
resolution
of climate information. Planning and installation of the automatic
weather
station network and to supervise the field works. (www.tradeoffs.montana.edu)
