Stop the Racism of the Alligator!

The Alligator continues to publish racially offensive cartoons, editorials, and news stories despite repeated attempts by community and student activist organizations to call the newspaper’s editors into account.  A broad coalition of more than a dozen student groups is requesting that the Alligator meet these non-negotiable, unconditional demands immediately (for more information, please go to http://plaza.ufl.edu/drevans/IAC%20Papers.html):

1) An official apology printed on the front page of The Alligator in large print that clearly and specifically recognizes the ways in which The Alligator has disrespected and offended the UF and Gainesville community recently and in the past.  This apology must be accompanied by an official statement that makes a sincere promise to the UF and Gainesville community that The Alligator will maintain a responsible attitude towards the entire community.

2) Full participation by the Alligator staff in current and future diversity and sensitivity training.

3) Implementation of a Journalism and Professional Code of Ethics, which must be approved by The Alligator Staff and the University of Florida and Gainesville community.

Please join us in protesting outside the Alligator’s office (1105 University Ave.) on Friday, January 20th at 1 PM to help ensure that these demands are met.
