MMC 2100: Writing for Mass Communication

I had never written a journalistic piece before this class, but I was quickly introduced to AP style and the inverted pyramid. We also worked on resumes, advertisements and slideshows. For our final project, the class was required to report on a health or environment story of our choosing and keep a blog to detail the reporting process. I chose to cover the Green Team, which is affiliated with the UF Office of Sustainability. I followed members around the campus as they helped tailgaters recycle and even got involved in digging through the trash myself. I called my blog, The Beat.

Along with this personal home page, I also built a Web site on publishing. A resource for college students who want to become book publishers, the site follows the employees of the University Press of Florida through their day-to-day activities.

JOU 4930: Multimedia Reporting

I took multimedia reporting as an extension of reporting, so I could learn to add new visual and aural dimensions to my stories. Our class learned to use Photoshop, Audacity, Soundslides and Windows Movie Maker. For the Soundslides project, I attended the Chinese American Student Association's annual New Year's show and took pictures of all the performances. For my final project, I was required to record an interview with my digital recorder and a video with my digital camera and put them together using Movie Maker to create a journalistic story. I covered the Gator Skim Club, the first collegiate skimboarding club in the world, and its trip to Vilano Beach, Fla.

JOU 3411: Design

The class tested my ability to use Adobe InDesign. For our final project, our class was required to choose a newspaper to redesign. I chose to revamp The Palm Beach Post's front page, and I created an alternative story form to go inside the lifestyle section of the paper.
