First Language Support in ESOL Program Models

Listed below are some ways that schools without bilingual programs can provide ESOL students support using their native languages.

• Encourage students to use L1 at appropriate times in the classroom,
• Train bilingual paraprofessionals to preview lessons in the student's L1,
• Organize peer tutoring and buddy programs,
• Obtain L1 materials for students to preview lessons in their native language, and
• Encourage parents to use L1 at home.
